Job Description:The Health and Wellness Assistant assists the Physical Therapist, Physical TherapistAssistant, Occupational Therapist, or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in tasksnecessary for the therapists to deliver physical therapy or occupational therapy toinfant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with a variety of physical andmental capabilities. The H & W assistant is also responsible for independently settingup, the treatment area, assisting in the delivery of restorative programs tomaintaining function for the patient population that is not appropriate for formaltherapy. This person is responsible for directing and instructing other care givers inrestorative exercise programs. The H & W assistant will also be in charge of theindependent exercise program, including marketing efforts for the program.Scope* Knowledge in the application and usage as well as interpretation of the information obtained from appropriate methods of monitoring including HR, BP, ECG, RPE, pulse oximetry.* Identifies the physiological responses to physical activity and the varied methods (HR reserve, METS, lactate, anaerobic thresholds, etc.).Understands basic principles of exercise prescription to develop an exercise program with an interdisciplinary approach for each patient.* Identifies risk factors and their possible impact on disease and rehabilitation or exercise prescription.* Assists in the administration of therapy care programs as deemed appropriate by the therapist or therapist assistant, or portions thereof, as planned and specifically directed by a Therapist or Therapist Assistant and permitted by the state licensing board.* Assists patients as per their restorative plan of care in the safe use of assistive devices such as canes, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs as permitted by the state licensing board.* Assists the therapist or assistant in requisition of supplies, DME, or adaptive equipment for use during the acute care stay, outpatient treatments or home use.* Sets up, monitors and delivers restorative exercise programs to patients in the acute care setting. Documents all patient restorative treatments in the medical record.* Assists the therapist, assistant or athletic trainer in setting up, monitory and progressing clients participating in the athlete enhancement program and independent exercise program.* Assists the therapist, assistant or athletic trainer in compilation of data related to care programs 10. .Assists the therapist, assistant or athletic trainer in marketing efforts related to the athlete enhancement and independent exercise program.* Adapts communication to the patient's level of understanding, in consideration of age. Reinforces the education of patients and family as part of the treatment plan and therapy process as permitted by the state licensing board.* Maintains open communication with Therapist, therapist assistant, medical/allied health personnel and regarding each patient's/client's performance/progress.* Prepares treatment areas, assuring the proper supplies and equipment are available to the therapist for procedures to be performed.* Maintains a neat and organized appearance in all areas of department. Core classes in physics, medical physiology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, strength and conditioning, anatomy and physiology, CPR and first aid, and medical terminology, a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft word, excel and power point preferred.CertificationRequired: BLS certification required within 60 days of hireLANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
